No band is more synonymous with battling music piracy than Metallica. The band's "victory" over Napster came at the heavy cost of alienating fans and coming off as stodgy old men. More than a decade later, with free music everywhere, artists ranging from David Byrne to Thom Yorke have been more than open about the impact of all this on the ability of the artist to make a living.
